Alex McCauley - Chief Executive
Alex is Executive Director and CEO of StartupAUS. He has previously worked as a lawyer, a diplomat for Australia’s foreign service, and a startup founder.
Having spent three years as an Australian diplomat in Tel Aviv, Alex came home to Sydney and started a tech company in 2015. Later that year he joined StartupAUS as Head of Strategy and Advocacy. He was responsible for developing StartupAUS’ extensive contribution to the Federal Government’s National Innovation and Science Agenda.
Alex was appointed StartupAUS’s first full-time CEO in February 2016 and has grown the organisation rapidly since.
During his time in Israel, Alex led the Australian Embassy’s strategy and analysis on regional security issues, as well as entrepreneurship & innovation policy.
Alex has qualifications in law, political science, and economics from the University of Sydney.
Alex Gruszka - Chief Operating Officer
Alex is the Chief Operating Officer of StartupAUS, taking responsibility for managing its research, data, and communications.
After an eight-year career in media, Alex transitioned into the startup space, initially as a founder, then educator until he found a home at StartupAUS, working to build Australia’s burgeoning startup ecosystem.
Alex has previously co-authored the Powering Growth AgTech report, edited Crossroads 2016 and Crossroads 2017.
Kate Dezarnaulds - Head of Partnerships
Kate is a business development consultant who works with not-for-profits and social ventures to increase their impact. She is also the founder of WorkLife, a regional co-working business with locations in Berry and Kiama on the NSW South Coast. Kate is a Director of Underbelly Arts and the National Trust (NSW).
Fleur Brown - Head of PR, media and events
Fleur is founder and CEO of Launch Group, a PR agency, founder and Executive Director of the TV Show ENTREPRENEURS on Sky Business News, and a founder of TEDXSydney. Through her work at Launch Group she has championed the interests of many of Australia’s leading startups, high growth technology companies and innovators.
Sophie Hanson - PR, media and events
Sophie is a specialist PR consultant with particular expertise in event management and influencer activities. Hailing from the UK, Sophie brings a wealth of international PR/digital/social media experience, having worked with some of the world’s leading beauty brands. Sophie is engaged with Launch Group, a PR agency representing some of Australia’s leading startups and innovators.
Amit Shah - Treasurer
Amit is the founder of The Startup Shop, a Sydney-based CFO advisory firm. He has worked in both professional and commercial finance roles within Australia and overseas, but has found his passion working with Australian startups. As well as being Treasurer of StartupAUS, he also sits as the current Treasurer of Fishburners.
Jonathan Hunter - Company Secretary
Jonathan is the Company Secretary of StartupAUS. He is an experienced corporate and commercial lawyer, having held legal and company secretarial positions in the media, software and retail industries and, more recently, in tech startups. In addition to assisting StartupAUS, Jonathan is currently General Counsel & Company Secretary of Expert360.
